I went throug a very similar experience as you (grew in another poor latin american country) and moved to the US. And for me it's been better than in the movies.
I have a good job, have the house I want and all the stuff I want. And I assure you it was not luck and no one gave me anything other than opportunities.
If you came to the US expecting to be given things for free, then yes you were fooled. If you expected coming here and getting opportunities, opportunities are there.

Love Charlie Chaplin. My Great Grandpa actually met him. Well...he shok his hand still pretty cool.

Brilliant! I adore Chaplin. This is also his voice over done many years later for the rerelease of this film. Chaplin felt that voice overs were the eqivelant of narrating the ballet. The film was well accepted with the voice over in the 50's. Although I do love Chaplins voice I do agree with him. There is no need for narration.

In reality the "shoe" was made of licorice, so that probably made it go down better!

I have seen in person the effects of capitalist imperialism. I have been hungry and cold. What Experience or knowledge do you posses to come and tell me about what goes on outside your "open-mind"

Do yourself a favor. Do just a little bit, just a little bit, of historical study. Try, as best you can, to do it open-mindedly. And once you've done it, see if you can, in all honesty, repeat the post you made about capitalism.

I love this scene! Chaplin was well and truly one of a kind! I gather that this was the inspiration for the scene in the 1937 Laurel & Hardy film "Way Out West" where Stan Laurel eats Oliver Hardy's hat, which was made out of licorice?
